Dr. Sönmez took part in teams that applied globally accepted surgical practices and techniques in the treatment of obesity for the first time in Turkey. In 2004, while he was still studying surgery at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, he took his first step into bariatric surgery by performing gastric band (stomach clamp) operations, which was one of the favorite methods of that period.

Seeing that this and similar bariatric surgeries performed as closed are quite different from the classical surgical principles and education, he specialized in bariatric surgery as well as basic surgical sciences.

After completing his General Surgery specialization training at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2007, he gave international training on sleeve gastrectomy (tube stomach) and gastric bypass operations, which started to become widespread in Turkey since 2008, and attended international congresses on the subject.

With years of experience and knowledge, he has taught many surgeons who have taken a new step in bariatric surgery and conveyed his experiences.
